Sports Events - Summer of 99


The summer in Kafarhata is a time of reunion, fun and lot of sport events. For many generations, Kafarhata had one of the best volleyball team in the area that was crowned "Champion of El-Koura" last summer by winning the Koura tournament. The summer of 99 witnessed many sport tournaments of volleyball, football and championships. furthermore in August, there was a meeting between the Lebanese national team and the visiting Australian club of Cedars. In September, Kafarhata hosted the Koura championship tournament for 1999.

The mother of all games was the traditional challenge between "Kafarhata team of Abu Dhabi" and the "Dream Team of Kafarhata" consisting of Kafarhata's retired players. This sold out event was under the guidance of the UAE ambassador in Lebanon and El-Koura deputies. After a furious battle, the "Dream Team" stole the momentum and the victory by beating Abu Dhabi team 2 games to 1. Below are some memorable moments of the event

(It's worthy to mention here that during the official tournament of 1996, a joint team from Abu Dhabi and the retired players beat the official strong team of Kafarhata during a breathtaking game)

The "Abu Dhabi Team" consisted of: Sami Abi Esber (captain), Walid Assaf, Hani Esber (The A'riss came from the honeymoon to participate in the event), Bassem Esber, Ziad Esber, Georges Esber, George Bashir (coach). The game was impartially conducted by the international referee George Ayoub with the assistance of referee Nazih Salem.

The "TABL" was ready after the game where players of both team and spectators celebrated the event with a rocking "Dabkeh". That was followed by a dinner celebration at the Octagon restaurant that lasted until the wee hours of the morning (photos by Nicolas Choueiri)
